A gravel driveway should be kept free from weeds for the safety of your vehicles and because weeds in a gravel driveway are an eyesore. To keep weeds out of a gravel driveway you will need to do a little bit of work, but the results will be rewarding. The weeds grow in gravel driveways by creeping up through the rocks where sunlight hits the soil. There is one way to stop the sun from promoting the weed growth.
Things You'll Need
Landscape plastic
Rake
Vinegar
Herbicide
Place the landscaping plastic on the soil. If you have gravel already laid, use a hard rake to move the gravel to one side so that you can lay the plastic sheeting.
Smooth out the plastic sheeting. Make sure that there are no cracks between the plastic rows of sheeting by overlapping the edges by an inch.
Add gravel to the top of the sheeting. Make sure to add at least an inch of gravel so that there is no light getting to the plastic landscaping material.
Check the gravel driveway from time to time to make sure that the weeds have been stopped. Sometimes the gravel will move under the weight of the vehicle. If this happens, and a weed pops up, use vinegar or a liquid herbicide to pour on the weed to kill it right away. The vinegar dries out the weed and sterilizes the soil, and the herbicide will wither the weed and kill it.
