Deer can be present not just in rural gardens, but also are prevalent in many urban settings and be quite frustrating to a gardener because they can virtually decimate the plants. Blueberry plants are a particular favorite of deer. Other than erecting a very high fence that the deer cannot jump over, the next best solution is to spray your blueberry plants with a deer repellent. Doing this with commercial repellent sprays becomes expensive, but you can make your own homemade deer repellent.
Things You'll Need
Hand sprayer
Eggs
Milk
Garlic
Red pepper sauce
Liquid dish soap
Strainer
Cooking oil
Dish detergent
Water
Hot pepper
Garlic powder
Deer Repellent Recipe #1
Combine the following: 4 eggs; 2 oz. chopped garlic; 2 oz.red pepper sauce; and 1 quart water.
Stir this mixture thoroughly and then pour it through a strainer to remove any pieces of garlic.
Place the mixture into a hand sprayer and thoroughly spray your blueberry plants with it. One quart of this recipe should cover 16 plants.
Repeat this application weekly during the growing season of your blueberry plant.
Deer Repellent Recipe #2
Combine the following ingredients: 2 tsp. hot pepper; 1 tsp. garlic powder; 1 tsp. liquid dish soap; and 1 gallon water.
Mix well until the garlic powder is dissolved.
Fill a hand sprayer with the mixture and thoroughly spray your blueberry plants with it. This mixture should be reapplied after overhead watering or rain.
Deer Repellent Recipe #3
Combine 1/2 cup milk with 1 egg, and mix well.
Add 1 tsp. cooking oil; 1 tsp. dish detergent; and 1 gallon of water to the milk and egg combination and mix well.
Spray this mixture on your blueberry plants to repel deer. Reapply it after every rain.
Tips & Warnings
Prior to harvesting and during the harvest period of your blueberries, it may be necessary to cover your bushes with a plastic mesh or netting to preserve the ripening berries.
