The dollar tree plant is a small shrub with thick oval-shaped leaves. The plant originates from South Africa and is most commonly called a jade plant. It is best grown outdoors in USDA zones 9a to 11 but will thrive indoors anywhere. The plant is popular with novice gardeners because it is easy to grow and will tolerate neglect well.

Plant the dollar tree in soil that is loose and has 50 percent organic compost. Most general purpose soils will meet this requirement. If soil is not loose enough, gravel should be added to the bottom of the pot to aid drainage.
Place the plant in a location where it will receive full sun the entire day. Some shade will be tolerated but can slow plant growth. Move outside on warm days, if possible, to allow the plant to absorb more light.
Water the plant frequently enough to keep the soil constantly moist. Avoid overwatering to the point of sogginess. Overly wet soil will cause root rot and lead to plant death. Do not allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
Feed the plant every three months with a general purpose granular fertilizer. When feeding, ensure that the soil is properly moist to avoid burning the roots.
Keep the plant in areas that stay above 50 degrees at night. Move it away from drafty windows unless they are properly covered.
Tips & Warnings
The dollar tree plant can reach a height of five feet or more when properly cared for. If you want to keep it smaller, prune the top of the plant yearly.
Propagate the plant by taking cuttings from a healthy plant. Allow the cut end to harden before planting. Plant the cutting in a mixture of soil and peat moss and place in a well-lit area. Avoid direct sunlight and move to a permanent location when roots are well established.
The dollar tree is prone to mealy bugs. Check a new plant carefully before bringing it inside. Chemicals can be purchased at any garden supply store to treat bug problems.
