How to Make a Plant Pot From a Plastic Milk Bottle

Empty plastic milk bottles can be used for a variety of things, such as a homemade planting pot for herbs or flower starters or for seasonal flowers that will not be in the pot long term. Making a pot from your used plastic milk bottle will not only save you money but it is also enviromentally friendly, because you are reusing a plastic material that would otherwise get thrown away.

Permanent marker or pen

Empty milk bottle

Wash and rinse out your empty plastic milk bottle and allow it to air dry completely.

Using your ruler and marker, draw straight lines around the bottle, directly beneath the handle, which will be used for a cutting guide.

Carefully poke the scissors through the marked line (anywhere is fine) and begin to cut around the milk bottle until the top comes off. Throw away the top portion of the bottle with the handle.

Turn the lower part of the milk bottle over and poke six to eight holes with the scissors for water drainage.

Fill the plastic pot with planting soil and then place the seeds of your choice in the soil.

Cover the milk bottle planter with a dark plastic bag once the plant begins to grow. This will prevent algae from growing inside the bottle. Make sure that you poke holes in the bottom of the plastic as well for the water to drain out.

Relocate the starter plant to the ground once it has developed. Carefully remove it from the milk bottle pot by squeezing the sides to loosen the dirt.

Cover up the plastic milk bottle on the outside with fabric or colored paper to add some style and personality and to block the sunlight.

It is not a good idea to leave a plant in a milk bottle planter pot long term. This can damage the roots, and algae can also grow if the milk bottle is not covered up.
