Whether your Scag mower has two, three or four blades, the process of changing them is simple. There's no need to pay a mechanic to do the job. You can easily do it yourself. Very little time is necessary, and the only tool you need is an impact wrench. Worn mower blades leave uneven cuts. To ascertain whether or not your mower blades need to be replaced, examine the outermost cutting edge of each blade. If the edge is so thin that it is curling, or if grooves appear in the metal appear, the blade is no longer good.
Things You'll Need
Floor jack
Impact wrench
Socket set
Raise the mower deck to the highest position.
Remove each belt cover.
Engage the brakes, and elevate the mower deck using a floor jack.
Locate the hex nuts attached to the bolt that goes through the spindle assembly to each blade (amounts depend on how many blades your machine has).
Remove the hex nuts using an impact wrench with the proper sized socket attached.
Push the bolt through the spindle assembly, and remove the spacer, the blade and the washer.
Replace the washer onto the bolt, then the new blade and the spacer.
Feed the threaded part of the bolt back up through the spindle assembly.
Thread the hex nut onto the bolt, and tighten with the impact wrench.
Lower the mower off the floor jack, and reattach the belt covers.
Tips & Warnings
Spraying the hex nuts with lubricant before removing them will make the job easier.
If you don't own a floor jack, elevate the mower by driving up a ramp.
