How to Use a Ride-on Mower

Ride-on mowers make the work of cutting grass easy and maybe even enjoyable. They aren't difficult to operate, nor are they difficult to maintain. New features include roll bars for safety, automatic shut-off switches to prevent accidents and more comfortable seats for less wear and tear on your body. Ride-on mowers are designed both for home owner and commercial use. The home owner's model costs less and is designed for less rugged and less frequent use. But it will certainly get the job done. The commercial ride-on mower has a more powerful engine and is built to handle frequent use and abusive terrain.

Safety goggles or other eye protection.

Check the air pressure in all tires and fill if necessary.

Make sure the oil reservoir and gas tank levels are adequate.

Mount the mower and get in the seat. There may be safety switches beneath the seat, which prevent the engine from starting if adequate weight is not sensed in the seat.

Be certain the brake is engaged and the blades are disengaged.

Adjust the cutting height according to your needs.

Pull out the choke button and move the throttle to the half-way position.

Turn the key to the start position and release as soon as the engine starts. Release the choke and increase the throttle speed to full.

Disengage the brakes and ease the steering levers forward.

Engage the blades by pulling up on the proper control.

When mowing is complete, disengage the blades, throttle down, turn the key to the off position and engage the brakes.

Read the operator's manual before using the mower.

Start off by using the mower in an open space, void of obstacles, holes and people.

Never operate machinery while under the influence of medications or alcohol.

Avoid wearing loose clothing.

Do not mow in areas where there are children.
