Honeysuckle vine is a flowering vine which produces nectar-bearing blooms. The vines of the honeysuckle are so hardy they are often used to weave baskets. The honeysuckle vine, though beautiful in its own right, also climbs over other plants and trees, depriving them of sunlight and water. This vine often overtakes the roots of other nearby plants to choke them out of the soil. Luckily, it can be eliminated without too much trouble.
Things You'll Need
Large pruning shears
Hand shears
Shovel
Gardening gloves
Herbicide containing glyphosate or triclopyr
Cut back as much of the vine as possible. Use both your large shears and hand shears to remove the majority of the foliage.
Use your shovel to dig as much of the root system out as possible.
Pull out small vines starting from the base of the plant upward. This ensures you will remove as much of the plant in one pull as possible.
Apply herbicide with glyphosate or triclopyr, according to the directions on the herbicide packaging. Both chemicals are systematic, meaning they are absorbed throughout and kill the entire plant.
Reapply herbicide as necessary. Honeysuckle vines are very hardy plants and it may take more than one season to rid your garden of these plants.
