Peaches (Prunus persica) have special requirements for blooming. Peach trees need a chill period to stimulate blossoms, but the trees don't respond well to winter temperatures that drop below 0 degrees Fahrenheit for long periods of time. The trees are hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 through 9.
Chill Requirement
Peach trees have a chill requirement -- this is where the tree must be subject to a specific temperature for a certain number of hours in order to produce blooms. Depending on the variety, the temperature ranges from 33 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit and the time ranges from 600 to 1,000 hours.
Bloom Time
The date a peach tree goes into bloom is dependent on the chill requirement for the variety. Trees with a lower chill-time specification will bloom sooner than those with a longer hour requirement.
Considerations
Stagger fruit production by planting several peach tree species with different chill requirements. It is possible to stagger the bloom and ripening period of the peach trees over a period of six to eight weeks by selecting short and long chill-requirement species.
