How to Use Soap to Keep Deer Away. Deer can be fun to watch, but when they eat your garden down to nubs, it might be time to find ways to deter them. Many perfumed soaps have a strong smell and bad taste that deer don't like, which can discourage them from eating out of your garden.
Deer can be fun to watch, but when they eat your garden down to nubs, it might be time to find ways to deter them. Many perfumed soaps have a strong smell and bad taste that deer don't like, which can discourage them from eating out of your garden.
Things You'll Need
Perfumed bar soap
Liquid dish soap
Styrofoam cups
String
Hot peppers
Use bar soap that is highly perfumed. Drill a hole right through the wrapper and the soap, thread a piece of string through and hang near your garden. Alternatively, cut a hole in the bottom of a Styrofoam cup, thread string through the hole and tie it around a chunk of soap. The cup will protect the soap and help it last longer if you live in a rainy area. Hang the cup and soap near the garden.
Use a liquid dish soap and water solution on plants to ruin the taste for the deer. Do a small test on each plant to be sure it can tolerate the soap solution.
A variation on the soap solution repellent is to infuse water with hot peppers, strain, and add the pepper water to the soap solution. Again, just be sure your plants can take it.
