Gnats are tiny flying insects that can bite humans or pets. Gnat bites are not harmful to humans and pets, but they do cause itching on the skin. Male gnats often fly in groups when they are ready for mating. If you are ready to enjoy a night of barbecuing and horseshoes in the backyard, you will need to know how to control the gnats. Orange oil is the perfect solution for controlling your gnat problem.
Things You'll Need
Orange oil
Water
Empty spray bottle
Unscented lotion
Aloe vera gel
Patchouli oil
Eucalyptus oil
In the Air
Mix 1 tbsp. of orange oil with 1 quart of water. Oils should always be diluted. There are many that are toxic when used at full strength.
Pour the mixture in to a spray bottle. This will disperse the orange oil insecticide much easier.
Spray the gnat repellent around the areas you see the gnats. You can safely spray this mixture on nearby plants and trees to deter the gnats from congregating on your property. This will help you control the gnats near your home.
Aim the orange oil spray directly at the gnats. If a gnat gets soaked with the mixture, it will die.
On Your Body
Measure out 6 oz. of unscented lotion. If you use an already scented lotion, the scents you add later may not mesh. Add 2 oz. of aloe vera gel to the unscented lotion. Aloe vera gel is good for your skin and will keep it moisturized.
Add 5 drops each of orange oil, patchouli oil and eucalyptus oil. Mix all of the ingredients together. These scents are known for their ability to repel gnats.
Rub the lotion on your skin when you are going to head outside. This homemade lotion with orange oil will control the gnats and keep them away so that they don't bite you.
Tips & Warnings
Peppermint soap can be used in place of orange oil for an outdoor gnat repellent.
Never use essential oils undiluted. They can be toxic if used that way.
