All of us love to bring the beauty of plants into our homes. Plants make us feel relaxed and allow us to experience a sense of accomplishment through taking care of them and ensuring they receive all necessary elements required for their survival. Plants also naturally clean the air in our homes by taking out the toxins that build up in the uncirculated air. In this article, you will find details on how to successfully grow a mass cane plant (Massangeana Cane), or "corn plant." This plant requires minimal care and thrives in indoor lighting conditions, thus making it an excellent choice for anyone needing to add a little "nature" to their home.
Things You'll Need
Mass cane plant
Container
Sand
Organic potting mix
Water
Fertilizer
Pruning shears
Purchase a mass cane plant. This can be done by going to a store such as Home Depot, or by going online and ordering one from a plant nursery.
Find a suitable place to put the plant in your home or office. Preferably, you should try to find a spot somewhere near a window. If you can't locate a window, don't worry; these plants can thrive in almost any lighting condition. You can turn a light on in the room that the plant resides in and it should do just fine. If you want, you can always place the plant outdoors in the warmer months to make up for any incongruencies with the lighting during the cold winter months when you keep it indoors.
Mix some potting soil for the plant. Take the pot that your plant is going in and fill it a third of the way with sand. Now, fill it the rest of the way up with a rich organic potting soil. Mix the sand and soil together until they are completely blended. The sand will keep the soil from compacting and allow for better drainage.
Place your plant in the pot and make sure that the soil is roughly 2 inches from the top of the pot. Use your hands to push the soil down around the base of the plant so that it is secured in its new home.
Water the mass cane plant. By watering it immediately after planting, you will make sure that there are no air bubbles left around the roots that could help in drying the plant out. Water the plant no more than once a week. If you over-water, you can actually kill the plant, so please stick to these guidelines. You'll also want to fertilize the plant roughly once a month during the warmer months and not at all during the fall and winter.
Use the shears to periodically remove dead and/or yellowing leaves from the plant. You can also use the shears to cut the top of the plant off if it starts to get too tall for your taste. The trunk will send out new shoots that will develop into a new set of foliage.
Tips & Warnings
Remember not to over-water the plant.
Only fertilize the plant in warmer months.
