A weeping cherry tree is most beautiful in the early spring when it blossoms. The blooms are pink or white, and the leaves are dark green in color with little change in the fall. Caring for a weeping cherry tree is not difficult, but it is important to know how much water to give it, especially during any dry summer months. Moist soil also helps keep pests away from the weeping cherry tree.
Things You'll Need
Water
Hose
Timer
When You First Plant the Tree
Keep the hose turned on with a trickle of water for 60 to 90 minutes when you first plant a weeping cherry tree. The hose should be placed next to the trunk of the tree with the water coming out around the tree, so the newly planted roots are able to soak it up.
Water the weeping cherry tree every three days with the method in Step 1 until you notice new growth on the trees' limbs or coming from the trunk.
Water the weeping cherry tree the equivalent of 1-inch of rainfall every week for its first year of life (after you noticed new growth on the tree). If it rains more than 1-inch in a week, then you will not need to supplement any water that week.
After One Year of Growth
Continue to monitor how much water your tree gets after its first year of life. Supplement rainfall with water from the hose if necessary, just like you did when you first planted the weeping cherry.
Remember when watering your weeping cherry tree that roots receive more water if it is delivered slowly for a longer period of time. For example, when there are heavy and fast rains, much of the water runs off the soil without being soaked in by the plants. The trickle of water from the hose next to the weeping cherry tree trunk for an extended period of time, such as one hour, is the best way to water the tree as it grows older.
Keep the soil moist around your tree. It should grow to its full height and stay healthy.
