To many people, the dogwood tree is a symbol of spring. To make sure its beautiful white or pink blossoms return every year, make sure you are feeding your dogwood. This is an easy task compared with taking care of some plants, which may not be able to grow on their own. A tree is set up for success. You just may need to give it a little help.
Things You'll Need
Dogwood tree
Compost
Tree fungicide
Give your dogwood tree enough sunlight. Dogwoods do not grow well in the shade, so do not plant another tree near it that will grow to more than 25 feet tall, the average height of a dogwood. Remember, sunlight is food for a tree, and dogwoods need the full sun.
Cover the dirt surrounding your tree with compost every spring. The compost should extend out as far as the tree's canopy goes. You can buy compost from a garden center or make it yourself. This will provide needed nutrients for your tree.
Water the tree for the first year after it has been planted. After that, water it only if there is a lack of rainfall for a long time. Make sure the roots are never swimming in water.
Monitor the leaves to make sure they don't turn brown. If they do, you may have a fungus problem. Coat the leaves with a tree fungicide if this becomes a problem.
Tips & Warnings
Plant a flower bed around the base of a dogwood tree to add even more color to your lawn.
Don't plant a new dogwood tree too close to another tree that might block its sunlight.
