When it comes to your home garden, a wide variety of plants need specific temperatures to survive---not just the temperature of the air around the plant but the temperature of the soil in which the roots grow. Luckily, you can easily take soil temperature: a process similar to taking the temperature of a piece of meat.
Things You'll Need
Soil temperature thermometer
Insert the soil thermometer into the ground where you want to read the temperature. Most soil thermometers will have inch marks along the insert pole to tell you how deep you have positioned the thermometer.
Leave the soil thermometer in the ground for several minutes. The thermometer may take a little bit of time to take an accurate reading.
Check the thermometer reading every hour to gauge how the temperature of the soil fluctuates with the temperature of the air around it.
Push the soil thermometer deeper into the ground. In all likelihood, the deeper you insert the thermometer, the lower the temperature reading.
