Water lilies typically come in two colors, white or yellow. These flowering plants thrive in freshwater locations, which makes them ideal for ponds. However, if the conditions are right, they can also take over your pond and choke out other vegetation. Water lilies love direct sunlight, lots of room to grow, and fertilizer. If you deprive them of these basic necessities, and follow a few more steps, you can rid your pond of water lilies quickly and efficiently.
Things You'll Need
Triclopyr TEA aka Renovate3® or Glyphosate aka Rodeo®, AquaMaster®, and AquaPro®
Yard gloves
Sprayer – with or without a backpack tank
Protective eyewear
Yard waste bags
Decide which type of herbicide you wish to use on the water lilies. When applied, Glyphosate soaks into the plant, systematically killing it. However, Glyphosate is not selective to the type of plants it kills. It can kill other vegetation and often needs several applications. It runs $15 to $35 per gallon. Triclopyr TEA also systematically kills the water lilies, but it is selective to what it kills. Triclopyr TEA targets broad leaf species, including your water lilies. It runs about $97 per gallon.
Put on your yard gloves and protective eyewear.
If some water lilies are shallow and close to shore, pull firmly on their stalks and they will come out. Throw removed lilies into one of your yard waste bags.
Follow the instructions on the herbicide's label and pour concentration of herbicide into your sprayer. Prime your sprayer by aiming it away from people and animals and squirting it a few times until the herbicide comes out.
Aim at the water lilies you wish to kill and cover their leaves and petals with the herbicide. Be careful not to splash and wash away the herbicide after application.
Check the lilies periodically to remove dead plants. Reapply your herbicide as needed.
