Ficus trees are popular indoor plants. They thrive in household climates, their leaves help clean the air and they are nice decorative items.
But every two to three years you may find your ficus has outgrown its old container and needs to be transplanted into a larger pot. It's simple to do, but a bit of care is required for this sensitive tree.
Things You'll Need
Garden gloves
Potted ficus tree with roots growing out of bottom of pot
Sharp knife
Larger plant pot, no more than two sizes bigger than the current pot
Garden shovel
Potting soil
Water
Work outdoors in a cleanable area, as it will get messy. Put on the gloves.
Grasp the ficus trunk and slide it out of the pot. You may need to place the pot sideways. Slide the knife between the soil and the pot if it is stuck. Use the knife to cut any roots stuck in the bottom.
Cut and loosen the root ball at the bottom of the plant (it will look like a big tangled mess of roots). This will help it regrow.
Place a few inches of potting soil into the new container with the garden shovel.
Place the tree with its root ball into the new pot. Add potting soil, leaving two inches between the top of the soil and the top of the container.
Press down on the soil with your hand or the garden shovel to get rid of air pockets.
Put the tree in its new container back in its proper spot. Water thoroughly.
Tips & Warnings
Ficus trees get used to one type of environment and don't do well if the environment is changed. Try not to move the tree from one environment to another, such as indoor to outdoor, or from a bright sunny room to a dim one.
Ficus trees tend to drop leaves after they're transplanted. Do not feed the tree again until new leaves appear.
