The Briggs and Stratton Quantum is a newer vertical orientation lawn-mower motor. Available in the five- to six-horsepower range, the Quantum is equipped with a tank-mounted carburetor. Cleaning this type of carburetor is quite simple compared to older inline style carburetors as you no longer have to deal with a float bowl. Cleaning the Briggs Quantum carburetor is a simple process for any home mechanic.
Things You'll Need
Screwdriver
Socket set
Carburetor spray cleaner
Pull the spark-plug wire loose from the plug to ensure there is no spark.
Locate the carburetor, which is a silver oblong attachment to the right side of the motor. Use the screwdriver to remove the two mounting bolts holding the outside shroud on the carburetor.
Pull the shroud off and use the socket wrench to loosen the mounting studs holding the throttle assembly in the left side of the carburetor. Slide the throttle assembly far enough away from the carburetor that you can can spray some of the carburetor cleaner into the throttle body and the other working parts.
Spray the throttle body and internals of the carburetor liberally and allow them to sit for a few minutes before repeating two to three times.
Slide the throttle assembly back into place and tighten down the mounting studs with the socket wrench. Slide the carburetor shroud back on and reattach it with the two mounting bolts and the screwdriver.
Tips & Warnings
You can lay a rag underneath the carburetor on the lawn-mower deck to catch the dirt and grime, and prevent it from landing on your mower deck, where it could damage the paint.
