There is nothing more frustrating waking up to find your pumpkins and your vegetable garden picked completely clean by meandering deer and rabbits. Seems as though even fences and pesticides can't keep away hungry deer. Using marigolds as deer repellent is an effective, all-natural way to keep your garden from being devoured. Deer and rabbits can't stand the smell and will avoid it all costs. This guide outlines how to use marigolds and other deterrents to keep deer away from your pumpkin patch.
Things You'll Need
Marigolds
Eggs
Blender
Spray bottle
Ivory or deodorant soap
Purchase a flat or two of marigolds with plenty of flowers from your local plant nursery. Completely encircle your garden with the marigolds, the more the better. Stagger them about 3 to 6 inches apart.
Combine three eggs in a blender with one cup of water. Combine this blended solution to a gallon of water and use a spray bottle to douse your pumpkin patch on a dry day. This is best performed earlier in the growing season, and each application lasts three weeks.
Hang bars of a strong deodorant soap or Ivory soap around the garden.
Enjoy a deer-free pumpkin garden.
Tips & Warnings
Although marigolds are effective at keeping deer and rabbits away, they won't keep every animal out. A line of marigolds coupled with wire fencing is a great combination for keeping your plants safe.
Do not allow the pumpkin patch to overgrow the line of marigolds, or your line of defense will become ineffective.
