Scotts Starter Fertilizer comes in mixes just for fertilization and mixes that fertilize newly planted and existing lawns while also preventing weed growth.

Garden hose
Determine how much fertilizer you need. A 4-lb. bag covers 1,000 square feet, an 18-lb. bag covers 5,000 square feet and a 50-lb. bag covers 14,000 square feet. If your lawn measures in between two of these measurements, purchase the larger bag.
Cover your grass seeds in at least ? inch of soil. Put on your gardening gloves and toss handfuls of fertilizer over the soil, as evenly spaced as possible. Rake the fertilizer evenly over your lawn with long, smooth strokes.
Water the grass until the fertilizer and soil are moist, but not soaked. This will help the fertilizer sink into the soil and nourish your lawn.
