Poison ivy is a nasty plant to have creeping around your yard. Avoid toxic interactions with the plant by eliminating it upon sight. A solution of bleach, salt and hydrogen peroxide is a fairly effective poison ivy killer as it dries out the plant's oils. The solution is also very effective at treating irritations on the skin caused by contact with the plant.
Things You'll Need
Plastic spray bottle
Water
Salt
Bleach
Hydrogen peroxide
Obtain an empty plastic spray bottle. These can be purchased cheaply, or you can simply rinse out an old cleaning solution bottle.
Fill the bottle half way with warm water.
Add half a cup of salt.
Add two cups of bleach.
Add half a cup of hydrogen peroxide.
Mix the solution together. Allow the salt to dissolve.
Spray in large sweeping motions over the poison ivy. Be quite generous, soaking the plants. If applying to the skin, use a cotton ball to dab the solution over the poison ivy.
Tips & Warnings
It is a good idea to wear rubber gloves while handling the bleach as well as the poison ivy.
This works best on a particularly hot day.
Be careful when pouring bleach into the spray bottle, wear an old shirt.
Be extremely careful when venturing into the patch of poison ivy. Wear long sleeve shirts and pants.
