Bamboo plants are the largest member of the grass family. They are woody evergreen plants that grow extremely quickly, with some varieties growing up to 2 inches per hour. Pruning is important for maintaining the form of the plant, as well as encouraging it to grow more leaves for a fuller appearance. If you need to prune a dead bamboo stalk to encourage new growth, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.
Things You'll Need
Gloves
Pruning scissors or shears
Locate the dead stalks that you need to remove from the bamboo plant. They are brownish with a broken appearance.
Use the pruning scissors to carefully cut off any dead stalks that are smaller then 1/2 inch thick. Cut these smaller dead stalks back to the node closest to the ground.
Use the pruning shears to cut off the stalks that are thicker than 1/2 inch. Cut these close to the base of the plant too, to the node closest to the ground.
