Carpenter ants can do a lot of damage to wood, outside and inside. These pest don't work the same as termites, as carpenter ants don't actually eat the wood. They damage it by making their nest. Imagine an ant farm, then imagine all that maze like construction tunneled throughout the wood of your home. Yikes! So lets discuss some killing and prevention methods.
Once you've determined you have carpenter ants find their nest. These will be holes with wood crumbs or dust around them.
Take a power drill and make long angled holes above the nest openings.
Spray an insecticide into the holes. Be sure to get it in there good and deep. Look for an insecticide that has boric acid, as it is proven effective at killing carpenter ants.
Put out other insecticide bait in areas that workers have been seen in. They will carry it back to the nest.
To prevent future infestations, replace any rotting or moist wood, indoors and outside. This even includes rotting trees. Store firewood away from the house and look for infestations before packing it inside. Carpenter ants are attracted to this type of environment.
Tips & Warnings
Be careful handling pesticides and do not put out where children or pets can get to it.
For heavy infestations, call an exterminator.
