Things You'll Need
Soil Test
Weed Killer
Soil Amendments if necessary(lime, phosphorous, etc.)
Roto tiller
Leveler
Grass
The first thing to do is test the soil. This will help you determine the pH level and if any amendments or nutrients are necessary.
After the soil test you will want to use a weed/lawn killer on the area that you wish to plant your lawn. Allow this to work for a few days so you can see if there are any areas you missed.
Now, that the weed and any old grass is dead, it is time to roto till the soil. This will help loosen up the soil and get it prepared to accept nutrients and the future lawn. After you till the soil this is the perfect time to add in any amendments such as lime or phosphorous. The soil test you did in step 1 will determine what, if anything you need to add.
After you have tilled and added amendments, it is time to thouroughly water the soil. This will help the ground settle and let you know if there are any hills or valleys in the soil. If there are noticeable hills and valleys you will want to rake these areas smooth. Your soil is now prepared for your lawn.
