There are a variety of weeds out there in the world attacking your perfect lawn. Like grass, weeds are fighting for a place in your lawn and competing for the same nutrients. The result is a war where one will suffocate out the other. Unfortunately without your help, the weeds will win. If you have weeds in your lawn, here is what you should do to help make your grass look healthier this season.
The best way to get rid of weeds is to stop them before they grow. This requires the application of a pre-emergence which will act as a poison to the seeds of weeds while not impacting the growth of your grass. If you have weeds that grow in early spring, middle summer or late in the fall you should apply the right pre-emergent at the right time to ensure it does the most for you.
Basic upkeep on your lawn by mowing normally will do wonders to control weeds. If you keep a well mowed lawn, the nutrients in the soil and sunlight will go to your grass as they will block out the young weeds trying to grow. If you have weeds in your lawn that contain seeds within them, be sure to not mulch but bag your clippings otherwise your weeds will just be expanded.
If step one and step two fails to get all of the weeds, there is always the manual labor approach of simply pulling the weeds out of your lawn. It is a daunting task but in the end, for very specific areas, it may be your only solution. The good news is that there are many devices out there now to help with weed pulling so that you are not on your knees and bending your back the whole time. Go to your hardware store and look for some tools to assist in the process.
The final step is the use of herbicides. Most garden and hardware stores now contain a spray that can be purchased to kill off any unwanted weeds in your yard or walkways. This is a poison so therefore requires more care then the other three methods I mentioned. Be sure to find one that will not hard the grass you are working so hard to defend but only goes after the specific types of weeds in your yard.

Stopping weeds from expanding and getting rid of weeds from your yard is a normal full time job for any homeowner who wants a good looking lawn. These steps should help you manage the weeds and overtime you should see them just disappear but don't be surprised if you see them again next year.
