Keeping your lawnmower engine running in top shape is vital to maintaining its efficiency and usefulness. A poorly running engine can result in unevenly mowed grass and a lot of frustration on your part as the engine sputters and stalls every few minutes. To prevent this from happening, take the time to adjust the speed of your lawnmower. Doing this will not only improve the look of your lawn, but will also make your lawnmower last longer.
Things You'll Need
Screwdriver
Locate the adjustment screws on your lawnmower engine. You should see two of them: one on the side of the carburetor barrel and the other underneath the float valve bowl connected to the barrel. The adjustment valve on the side is for air adjustments, and the one underneath is your high-speed adjustment.
Turn both adjustment screws clockwise with a screwdriver until they are seated at the bottom. Do not over-tighten the screws, or you will damage the valves. Turn back the adjustment screws 1-1/2 turns.
Start your lawnmower engine and allow to warm up for about 5 minutes. Turn the adjustment screw on bottom of the float valve bowl counterclockwise one complete turn to speed up the engine. Adjust until it is set at the speed you desire, without giving too much fuel and choking the engine.
Tips & Warnings
Be careful not to over-tighten the adjustment screws.
