If you have ants in your home or garden, you undoubtedly want to get rid of them quickly. Though pesticides and chemical treatments are commonly used to eliminate ants, such methods are not good options if you have pets. If your pets were to lick, eat or otherwise ingest the pesticides, they could end up sick or even dead. Thankfully, there are many natural treatments available that can get rid of ants without risking your pets.
Things You'll Need
Cornmeal
Ground black pepper
Spray bottle
Vinegar
Water
Small containers
Borax
Mint
Flour
Pour cornmeal in the area. Ants cannot digest cornmeal. Once they eat it, it expands in their stomachs, effectively killing them. Cornmeal is safe for your pets to eat.
Sprinkle ground black pepper across the ants' trail or around the perimeter of your home or garden. Ants will not cross black pepper, but it will have no effect on your pets.
Fill a spray bottle with three parts vinegar and one part water. Spray the area with the solution. Ants are repelled by the vinegar's acidity. Pets don't like the taste of vinegar, but it won't hurt them.
Place borax in small containers. Put the containers strategically throughout your home or garden. A complex borate mineral, borax is harmless to both humans and pets, but ants will not cross it.
Put fresh mint in the area. Ants dislike the smell of mint, so they will stay away. Mint will also help your home or garden to smell nicely.
Pour flour on the ants' trail. Flour will kill existing ants and discourage other ants from settling there. Your pets may play in the flour, but they are unlikely to eat it. Even if they do, it is harmless.
