If you garden or hike or just like to spend some time on the deck in the cool summer evening, you will become some insect's appetizer sooner or later. In these days of "Green" living, it is nice to have some natural alternatives to commercial insect bite remedies. Essential Oils can provide the alternatives you seek.
Things You'll Need
Any of the following Essential Oils:
Basil
Chamomile
Cinnamon
Clary Sage
Garlic
Lavender
Lemon
Onion
Tea Tree
Peppermint
Savory
Thyme
A Carrier Oil such as:
Alcohol
Cider Vinegar
Water
Determine the essential oil you require. This depends on your personal stock of oils as well as the type of bite you will be treating. For insect bites in general, any of the following essential oils have the anti-toxic and anti-venomous properties needed to be effective: basil, cinnamon, garlic, lavender, lemon, onion, Clary sage, savory and thyme. Many of these can be applied directly to the bite using a cotton swab or fingertip.
To treat mosquito bites, any of the following essential oils will provide relief: Clary Sage, Lavender or Tea Tree oil. Use a cotton swab or your finger to apply any one of these oils directly to the area. These oils can be applied repeatedly until itching and swelling cease. Lavender relieves the itching. Clary Sage relieves the itching and the swelling.
Treat spider bites with three drops of lavender and two drops of Roman Chamomile mixed into 1 tsp. of alcohol and applied to the area three times a day. This should help with the pain and swelling associated with spider bites.
Tend to bee stings with essential oils by removing the stinger, then applying a cold compress soaked in a half cup of water containing six drops of Roman Chamomile. Apply one drop of Roman Chamomile to the area three times a day for the next two days.
Give first aid for wasp stings, which respond to a drop of basil, two drops of Roman Chamomile and two drops of lavender mixed into 1 tsp. cider vinegar. Apply this blend to the bite three times a day.
Buy a commercial blend if you are not comfortable mixing your own or just want to have something at hand at all times. Young Living Essential Oils carries a blend known as Purification that also can be applied to many bites and stings to remove the injected poison. Insect bites that can be treated using this method include those from wasps and brown recluse spiders.
Tips & Warnings
Great caution should be used when applying Essential Oils directly to the skin because irritation can occur. If skin is the least bit sensitive, consider using a teaspoon of carrier oil like Grape Seed or Sweet Almond to dilute the concentration.
