How to Make Natural Aphid Spray. Aphids are very tiny insects, but they can do severe damage to plants very quickly. If you prefer not to deal with the destructive little bugs by chemical means, there are some very effective natural ways to treat an infestation.
Aphids are very tiny insects, but they can do severe damage to plants very quickly. If you prefer not to deal with the destructive little bugs by chemical means, there are some very effective natural ways to treat an infestation.
Things You'll Need
4 cups water
Saucepan with lid
Peel of 2 fresh organic lemons or oranges, grated
Cheesecloth or muslin
Spray bottle
1 1/2 cup water
1 cup vegetable oil
2 tsp. dish soap
Natural Citrus Aphid Spray
Place the water in a saucepan and bring it to a boil over high heat.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and add the grated peel of the fresh organic lemons or oranges.
Put the lid on the saucepan and allow the mixture to steep overnight.
Strain the mixture through a piece of cheesecloth or muslin, and discard the grated peels.
Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray the affected leaves, being sure to coat both the tops and undersides.
Natural Soap Aphid Spray
Place the water in a plastic spray bottle.
Add the vegetable oil and dish soap.
Shake the spray bottle gently to blend the ingredients.
Spray the natural soap aphid spray on the affected plants every few days.
Tips & Warnings
Ladybugs and lacewings love to eat aphids for lunch. Planting herbs such as dandelion, yarrow, dill, fennel and mint will attract these natural predators to your garden. This, combined with the use of natural sprays, can very effectively control an aphid population.
