Sprinkle red pepper or coffee grounds around the counters. If you are comfortable with Borax, mix with sugar and sprinkle around. If ants are present, spray them with 3 parts dish soap and 1 part water. It instantly kills them.
To get rid of household ants, you have to take care of the outside of the house as well. Go to a pool store and get Diatomaceous earth and sprinkle along the side of the house. If you would prefer a home remedy, try baby powder.
Another natural way to get rid of household ants is mint plants. Grow them along the side of the house.
