Hydroponics is the latest way to grow plants and flowers. The method works with all of the natural things plants need but eliminates the need for soil. It's a simple recipe: add the necessary nutrients to the water, which already contains the oxygen, and top it off with sunlight. The outcome is wonderfully thriving plants and flowers that are eco-friendly as well.
Realize the components necessary for adequate plant growth. Water is necessary, of course, because it's the basis of the hydroponics. Water holds the oxygen, and for plants that seem to need additional water, air tubes designed for fish tanks work well. Provide light from either natural sunlight or alternatives such as incandescent lamps. Finally, the plant needs minerals to grow that it would normally draw from soil such as potassium, calcium, nitrogen, magnesium, phosphorous and sulfur.
Choose a vase or container for the plant. It should be large enough to accommodate the existing roots. Fill with marbles or water crystals, which are absorbent crystals designed to help plants grow without soil.
Measure the crystals and incorporate about ? to 1 teaspoon of crystals for each 8 ounces of water. Add food coloring to the water for a unique look if you desire.
Remove the plant from the soil and rinse the roots under a gentle stream of water, cleaning off as much dirt as possible. Work gently through the roots with your fingers and, if necessary, allow the plant to soak in a bowl of water to loosen any stuck on debris.
Strain the water crystals to remove any excess water and place the swollen crystals in the plant container. Gently work the roots into the crystals, threading them through the crystals and spreading them apart as much as possible. Be careful not to break the roots as it can send the plant into shock and affect how it grows.
Spritz the plant with liquid minerals or add the recommended amount of drops directly to the water. Fill a spray bottle with 10 parts water to 1 part liquid mineral and spray according to the manufacturer's directions.
